CWR Versions
CWR Versions 2.1 and 2.2
CWR (Common Works Registration) has evolved over time, with the two most widely used versions today being 2.1 and 2.2. Both are still in use across societies worldwide, which means you may need to work with either depending on the recipient’s system.
A version 3.x of CWR has been drafted by CISAC, but it is not mature and rarely used in the industry. For this reason, Reprtoir does not yet provide exports in version 3.x. Adoption is expected to be gradual in the coming years.
CWR 2.1
CWR 2.1 is the longstanding industry standard.
It is supported by nearly all CMOs/PROs/MROs and remains the default version for most exchanges.
Key characteristics:
- Supports only one work identifier (e.g. ISWC, internal code) per work.
- Provides all essential records: ownership shares, contributors, roles, affiliations.
- Simpler structure, which makes it highly compatible across societies.
Use case: Ideal when you need maximum compatibility with societies worldwide.
CWR 2.2
CWR 2.2 is a newer version that adds more flexibility and precision.
It is gradually being adopted by societies, but support is not yet universal.
Key characteristics:
- Allows multiple identifiers per work (ISWC, internal codes, local codes from several societies).
- Better handling of complex rights chains, including multiple publishers, administrators, or sub-publishers in overlapping territories.
- Provides more detailed metadata fields, reducing the need for local adaptations.
Use case: Best when working with societies or partners that have confirmed 2.2 support, especially if your catalog requires multiple identifiers.
Which Version Should You Use?
When exporting a CWR file, always check the requirements of the receiving society:
- If the society supports only 2.1, use 2.1 for full compatibility.
- If the society accepts 2.2, and your catalog benefits from multiple identifiers or detailed metadata, choose 2.2.
- If unsure, start with 2.1 — it remains the safest choice.
👉 Reprtoir supports both versions. You can select the version in the CWR export form before generating your file.
Comparative View
Dimension | CWR 2.1 | CWR 2.2 |
---|---|---|
Adoption | Universal support across societies | Partial support, adoption still ongoing |
Work Identifiers | Only one identifier (e.g. ISWC or internal code) | Multiple identifiers supported (ISWC + local codes from several societies) |
Rights Chains | Standard handling | Better handling of complex/overlapping rights structures |
Metadata Coverage | Essential fields only | More detailed fields, fewer local adaptations required |
Compatibility | Safest, always works | Best when the recipient has explicitly confirmed support for 2.2 |
WarningEven though CWR 2.2 offers richer metadata and more flexibility, sending a 2.2 file to a society that does not support it will usually result in a rejection. Always confirm the version requirements with the recipient before exporting.
