Publishing

Context

You are the Publisher ("Pub Inc.") of a work. You may control all the contributors involved, or share control with other publishers and unaffiliated authors.

The purpose of this use case is to show how to file a new work with a Collective Management Organization (CMO). If you are updating an existing work, the data you send is exactly the same β€” the only difference is that the CMO treats it as an update rather than a new registration.

You declare the chain of rights: all contributors (Authors, Composers, Publishers), the controlled and uncontrolled shares, and the organizations they are affiliated with. This ensures that societies have a clear and transparent view of the work’s ownership and administration.

All examples below are fully CWR compliant.

Disclaimer:

The examples shown in this documentation are provided for demonstration purposes only. They illustrate how publishing agreements can be represented in Reprtoir in a way that is fully CWR compliant.

Your own registrations may differ depending on the specific terms of your agreements and the **requirements of the societies"" (CMO/PRO/MRO) you work with. Always adapt these examples to your actual situation.

Case 1: Sole Controlling Publisher

In this scenario, you, the Original Publisher ("Pub Inc."), are the only controlling party. All contributors are under your control, which means you administer 100% of the controlled shares in the work.

Your registration includes the contributors you control, as well as your own role as Publisher. Since there are no other publishers or uncontrolled contributors involved, the chain of rights is straightforward. This setup guarantees that societies receive a clear and unambiguous declaration, and it is fully CWR compliant.

Case 2: With Other Uncontrolled Parties

In this scenario, you, the Original Publisher ("Pub Inc."), declare the shares you control along with the contributors you represent. Another publisher ("Other Pub Inc.") is also involved, controlling its own contributors and shares, and the work may also include contributors who are not affiliated with any publisher.

In your declaration, all these parties must appear in the chain of rights. You declare your controlled shares, while the other publisher and the unaffiliated contributors are declared as uncontrolled. This ensures that the work’s ownership is fully transparent and that societies have a complete view of the rights distribution.

This setup reflects a typical publishing situation where rights are split across multiple publishers and include unaffiliated contributors. Declaring all parties β€” controlled and uncontrolled β€” ensures transparency, avoids conflicts, and remains fully CWR compliant.
